Independent Marrakech guide
Things to Do in Marrakech: An Independent Traveler's Guide
Marrakech is easy to over-plan. Keep the medina walkable, group nearby sights together, and save taxis for places such as Majorelle or Gueliz that sit outside the old-city core.

Quick answer
- Half a day: Bahia Palace, the Kasbah area and Jemaa el-Fna work well as one compact medina block.
- One full day: add a northern-medina stop such as Le Jardin Secret, Dar El Bacha or Ben Youssef Madrasa rather than crossing the city repeatedly.
- Two days: use the second day for Majorelle, Gueliz, a hammam or a slower cafe and shopping day.
If you only have a few hours
Half day
Keep it compact: Bahia Palace, the Saadian Tombs or Kasbah streets, then finish around Jemaa el-Fna as the square starts to change toward evening.
One full day
Use one half of the day in the southern medina and one in the northern medina. Add Le Jardin Secret, Dar El Bacha or Ben Youssef Madrasa without turning the day into a taxi circuit.
Two days
Keep day one for the medina. Use day two for Majorelle and Gueliz, then leave room for a hammam, cafe or an early evening rooftop.
Medina sights worth grouping together
Bahia Palace
A 19th-century palace known for decorated courtyards, carved plaster, painted ceilings and gardens. It fits naturally with the southern medina and Kasbah area.
- Good for: architecture and a first Marrakech visit
- Area: southern medina
- Combine with: Saadian Tombs and Jemaa el-Fna
Saadian Tombs
A compact royal necropolis in the Kasbah area. It makes more sense as part of a southern-medina walk than as a special trip across town.
- Good for: history and architecture
- Area: Kasbah
- Combine with: Bahia Palace
Le Jardin Secret
A restored historic garden and palace complex in the Mouassine area. It is a useful calm stop when the medina starts to feel busy.
- Good for: gardens and a quieter break
- Area: northern medina
- Combine with: Dar El Bacha and the souks
Dar El Bacha
The palace is worth the stop for its architecture and museum setting. Bacha Coffee is inside the complex, but treat the cafe as an optional extra rather than the reason to cross the city.
- Good for: architecture, exhibitions and coffee
- Area: northern medina
- Combine with: Le Jardin Secret
Ben Youssef Madrasa
One of the medina's strongest architectural stops, with carved wood, plaster and zellige around its central courtyard.
- Good for: architecture and history
- Area: northern medina
- Combine with: House of Photography
House of Photography
A smaller museum built around historical photography of Morocco, with a rooftop that makes it a good change of pace from larger monuments.
- Good for: photography and a slower museum stop
- Area: northern medina
- Combine with: Ben Youssef Madrasa
Majorelle and modern Marrakech
Majorelle Garden
Majorelle sits outside the medina, so give it its own block rather than squeezing it between old-city monuments. Timed entry can matter, so check the current official booking setup before you go.
- Good for: gardens, design and photography
- Area: northwest of the medina
- Combine with: Gueliz
Gueliz
Use Gueliz when you want modern cafes, shops, wider streets and a break from medina navigation. Carre Eden and the surrounding streets are easy reference points.
- Good for: coffee, shopping and an easy evening
- Area: modern city
- Combine with: Majorelle
Coffee, hammams and evenings
For coffee, Bacha Coffee works naturally if you are already visiting Dar El Bacha. Gueliz is easier when you want a modern cafe without building the day around a specific venue.
For a hammam, decide first whether you want a traditional local bath or a polished hotel-spa treatment. They are different experiences and the price gap can be large. High-end hotel spas such as Royal Mansour and La Mamounia are options when the spa itself is part of the day.
For an evening, a medina rooftop gives you the old-city atmosphere without another sightseeing stop. Venue hours, music schedules and alcohol service can change, so check the same day rather than planning the trip around an old list.
Planning a tour around your Marrakech days
Keep the city days independent when the city itself is the point. Use a shared tour when it solves a different part of the itinerary, such as a Sahara crossing or a same-day excursion outside Marrakech.

Keep Marrakech independent, organize the harder legs
If Marrakech is one stop in a wider Morocco route, compare the shared Sahara tours and day trips that start here. Use this guide for the city time you keep on your own.
