Chefchaouen is for travelers who want one destination badly enough
This is the longest current Fes day trip. The reward is approximately 3 to 4 hours of independent time in Chefchaouen's blue medina, but the trade-off is a long return road day.
Choose it because Chefchaouen itself is a priority, not because it is the easiest day outside Fes.
Volubilis, Moulay Idriss and Meknes is the history-heavy choice
This is one combined route, not three separate day trips. It mixes the archaeological site at Volubilis, the hill-town setting of Moulay Idriss Zerhoun and imperial-city landmarks in Meknes.
Expect more structured sightseeing and uneven archaeological ground than on the Middle Atlas route.
Middle Atlas is the shortest, scenery-led option
Ifrane, the Azrou region and cedar-forest country make this the best fit when you want a change of landscape without committing to a 10- or 12-hour day.
Treat wildlife as a possibility, not a promise. The route should still make sense to you if no macaques are seen.
