Ait Ben Haddou is an old city near Marrakech located along the Ounila Valley. This UNESCO World Heritage site in Morocco is quite popular with tourists.
Mostly because it is a filming site for HBO’s hit series Game of Thrones. This astonishing Berber Kasbah is more than 1000 years old, but it is still relevant and a must-see for anybody visiting Morocco.
This village, which connects the High Atlas Mountains to the desert beyond, is ideal for architecture and history enthusiasts.
During Season 3 of Game of Thrones, Ait Ben Haddou was utilized as a filming site for Yunkai. Daenerys Targaryen liberated the slave-trading city of Yunkai from its slave traders. And since it appeared on Game of Thrones, it has grown in popularity.
This location is not only famous for HBO’s blockbuster series Game of Thrones, but it has also been utilized in the films The Mummy, Gladiator, Alexander, and Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. And the list goes on and on, and we wouldn’t want to bore you to death with all of them, lol.
This golden-stoned ksar (fortified village) rises dramatically from the earth amid breathtaking scenery, with its unusual architecture and decorations that stand as a perfect example of ancient Berber architecture. And you can’t help but imagine yourself as a LORD of this village around the 17th century with thousands of people to look out for and from, lol.
It’s a fairy-tale setting, and due to its surreal beauty, the orange-hued turrets and curvy lanes inside have become a favorite film location for Hollywood.
If you want the full Ait Ben Haddou experience, you can even sleep within the ksar, though those who prefer creature comforts should be aware that there is no electricity within the mudbrick walled structure itself.
